Ardour capabilities include: multichannel recording, non-linear, non-destructive region based editing with unlimited undo/redo, full automation support, a mixer whose capabilities rival high end hardware consoles, lots of plugins to warp, shift and shape your music, and controllable from hardware control surfaces at the same time as it syncs to timecode. If you've been looking for a tool similar to ProTools, Nuendo, Cubase SX or Sequoia, you might have found it.

But whether you pay for Ardour or not, you are welcome to make copies for your friends. Hopefully, they'll want to pay for it too. No dongles, no activation keys, only trust.
Open Development Process

Anyone can participate in the development of Ardour. Because everyone can get the source code, Ardour will continue to be developed and supported with or without the involvement of its original authors. Contrast this to the collapse of a company, or a discontinued product. Moreover, anyone with programming skills can add features to Ardour, or fix problems.
Platform-Neutral Technology

Ardour will can be ported to just about any system that complies with the POSIX operating system standard. It's already being ported to Mac OS X with very few changes.

Rather than being a product of a particular company, it's a center around which a community can focus its interest and effort. A program for which new releases can happen as often as necessary to bring new functionality and improvements. A program to build the future with.

Movie studio in a Linux Box

RENDER LIKE A DENTIST

Video processing takes too long to do on a single computer. In fact no matter how fast the computer, no matter how much tediously hand optimized assembly language is behind it, it's Gaul awful slow. Every video program has a clustered rendering system of some kind and Cinelerra is no exception.

The biggest difference between this renderfarm and normal renderfarms is you don't need to pay for node licenses. You can keep installing nodes without paying for either the operating system or the application.

Then of course, you don't want to wait for effects to render before finding the result of your tweeking, so now there's background renderfarm. Set a location on the timeline to background render on the renderfarm and watch it play back on your desktop with unseen masses of servers behind it.

Finally, there's batch rendering. Schedule a bunch of edit decision lists to compress. Schedule several different compression formats for the same edit decision list. Let it run over night to keep your apartment warm and in the morning they'll all be finished.

Video rendering is a good way to take advantage of the latest CPU power instead of just running benchmarks. It can take all your terrahertz Athlons for a ride. No terrahertz Athlons? Go to India and get one. With background renderfarm, even the outsourced, gravity defying technology of India is practical today.


BORN TO MIX

Cinelerra does 6 channel audio. The tracks are unlimited. The editing is non destructive. The effects are realtime. Play mp3's, rip CD's, encode OGG / Vorbis. Load audio separately from video or paste it in. This kind of audio integration with video is really hard to get.

Audio can be routed through effects and mixes just as if you had real connectors and cables. Just drag and drop effects and play. Route audio tracks through each other. Mute and solo tracks. A context sensitive menu lets you share effects between tracks.

Now imagine a laptop which didn't need dongles to run anything. Imagine not having to phone in and wait a week to renew licenses every week. If that doesn't make you nihilistic, consider this. Liz Phairoine, the only heroine winning the bread in Illinois, married a film editor.

CinePaint is a free open source painting and image retouching program designed to work best with 35mm film and other high resolution high dynamic range images. It is the most popular open source tool in the motion picture industry -- used in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, Stuart Little and other feature films. CinePaint is used for painting of background mattes and for frame-by-frame retouching of movies. It is being extended to do film restoration. CinePaint is available for Linux, Macintosh OS X, Windows, and other popular operating systems.



Animation renderers and 35mm film scanners are capable of creating greater color bit-depth than can be displayed on monitors (8-bit per channel) or can be manipulated in most programs.
