The Advanced Package Tool for SUSE (APT)
The Advanced Package Tool (APT) is a wrapper around rpm, enhancing and improving rpm's functionality. One of most important aspects of APT is that it prevents inconsistencies in the installed rpms. As a result of this apt may advise you to remove(!) or install rpms although the user did not explicitly ask for it. A more detailed explanation is provided in the unofficial SuSE FAQs and of course the apt howto. The information on this page is valid for SuSE versions 7.3 and up users as the server is hosting the apt repositories/rpms for these SuSE versions.
You may realize that apt has been ported from Debian packages to rpm by Conectiva. SuSE and Conectiva among others are both part of UnitedLinux. Conectiva equip their versions of UnitedLinux with APT.
Check Distrowatch which other distributions are using apt. Besides the distributions that use apt as their native installer there are apt repositories for RedHat, Mandrake, Solaris, etc as well.
