	<description>San Jose (CA) - Nvidia today announced the availability of PureVideo. The technology is designed to accelerate MPEG 2 and high-definition content on computer systems equipped with an Nvidia graphics card carrying a GeForce 6-series processor.

The company has been talking about PureVideo for quite a while now, since the introduction of the GeForce 6800 back in April of this year, to be exact. However the enabling software was missing so far. Now, Nvidia has the driver package in place and promises to take video quality on the PC to the next level. 
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
PureVideo is based on a programmable video processing engine integrated in GeForce 6-series graphics processors. According to Nvidia, the feature &quot;eliminates the need for separate hardware or chipsets and takes the load off the PC's multi-purpose CPU to deliver to consumers, high-quality video playback at resolutions up to 720p and 1080i&quot;. 
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Key features of PureVideo include a dedicated 16-way vector processor that enables HD MPEG2 hardware acceleration while taking processing load off the CPU. The technology also is able to accelerate Microsoft's WMV and HD WMV. PureVideo allows real-time video recording, spatial and temporal adaptive de-interlacing from satellite, cable and DVD feeds, 3:2 pull-down correction and &quot;bad edit&quot; correction, the latter however only for 6800 and 6600 models. Additional functions include &quot;flicker-free&quot; multi-stream scaling, and display Gamma correction.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
&quot;Over the last couple of years consumers have started demanding smooth, high-quality DVD playback and stutter-free, high-def viewing on their PC,&quot; said Derek Perez, spokesman for Nvidia. &quot;Consumers want the same visual quality whether using a PC or a CE device. So in order to keep with the demands of the CE market, we developed PureVideo and included features like 3:2 pull-down correction, video HD playback, progressive scan line de-interlacing, and more.&quot;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
To be able to use the PureVideo feature, an updated Forceware driver as well as Nvidia's DVD decoder and supporting applications such as the Windows Media Player 10. According to Perez, Microsoft's DirectX Video Acceleration API &quot;already exists for playback acceleration on the GeForce 6-GPUs. &quot;In addition, many applications are built to accept our DVD Decoder as part of its architecture and receive the benefits that the DVD Decoder enables,&quot; Perez said.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
The diver itself is offered as a free download, Nvidia's DVD Decoder however has to be purchased for $20.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Initially supported with the GeForce 6800 (NV40), PureVideo capabilities in Vidia's processors were improved over time. For example, the 6800 does not offer hardware acceleration of media played in Windows Media Player 9, but requires the CPU to carry 100 percent of the load instead. Perez said that Nvidia &quot;will look for more ways to improve CPU utilization&quot; over the life span of the product. However, &quot;every GeForce 6 GPU, including the original 6800 Ultra comes with spatial-temporal de-interlacing, 3:2 pulldown correction, 3:2 bad edit correction, 4x5 scaling, extended color support, MPEG-2 and MPEG-2 HD hardware decode acceleration,&quot; he said.

&lt;br /&gt;
The PCIe version of the 6800 (NV43) and &quot;all 6600's&quot; received added hardware decode acceleration of WMV - HD content, according to Perez.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Nvidia considers Microsoft's heavily pushed entertainment PC platform as one of the main drivers for PureVideo: &quot;It plays a huge role. We made PureVideo due to a large part of the Media Center momentum that Microsoft is promoting,&quot; Perez said. &quot;They are trying to raise the bar of Video on the PC, and we aligned ourselves to fit their goals as well. In fact, in recent analyst reports, an estimated 60 million households expected to embrace high-definition devices by 2008.&quot;

If two graphics cards in one system are too expensive or simply not fast enough, Gigabyte's new 3D1 board may be worth a serious look. Sources told Tom's Hardware Guide, that the company prepares to launch a dual-GPU card Friday, saying that it will &quot;revise the VGA performance ranking&quot;. 
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
The card integrates two Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT graphics processors and is the first 6600 GT card on the market to offer a total of 256 MByte DDR 3 memory and 256 Mbit of memory bandwidth, according to the manufacturer. The card is cooled by two on-board fans.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
The 3D1's two processors communicate through Nvidia's SLI interface and achieved 14,293 points in 3DMark2003, sources at Gigabyte said. This would not only be almost twice the performance of a regular 6600 GT card, but also more than ATI's Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition, which achieved in Gigabyte's test environment 13,271 points and Nvidia's GeForce 6800 Ultra, which posted 12,680 points.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
While Gigabyte claims that the 3D1 will trump the performance of Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition and the GeForce 6800 Ultra cards, it says that the card will be offered in combination with the mainboard GA-K8NXP-SLI for less money than ATI's and Nvidia's single-GPU graphics cards alone. These high end cards current carry suggested retail prices between $500 and $600.

&lt;br /&gt;
Tom's Hardware Guide's test lab staff will run the 3D1 through its benchmark track, as soon as the card becomes available. According to sources, will be available in samples at the end of this month and will be sold as &quot;luxury solution&quot; for gamers by mid of January.

San Jose (CA) - PCI Express allows Nvidia to tap into system memory to save expensive on-board graphics memory and achieve high performance at the same time. Tom's Hardware Guide and other publications however raised concerns over a possibly misleading naming of the cards and prompted Nvidia to revise the product name.&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Using system memory has been an idea of graphics card manufacturers in the late nineties to be able to offer their products at cheaper price points. Now the approach returns with ATI's recently announced &quot;Hypermemory&quot; and Nvidia's &quot;Turbocache&quot;. This time, however, the firms are able to use a much faster interface to write and read data from the mainboard: PCI Express supplies four Gbit of bandwidth between the core logic and the graphics processor. 
&lt;br /&gt;

Turbocache refers to the memory which is located on the graphics card and acts as a supporting frame buffer and a software managed graphics cache. A &quot;Turbocache Manager&quot; dynamically allocates memory to improve system performance while &quot;intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance,&quot; Nvidia said. Depending on the product, the local cache is available in sizes of 16 MByte, 32 Mbyte, and 64 MByte. According to Nvidia, the 6200 cards with Turbocache are up to 25 percent faster than an X300 SE and up to 50 percent speedier than an X300 LE from competitor ATI.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
As it was the case with the &quot;shared memory&quot; from the late nineties, Nvidia intended to highlight the actual memory capability of the cards which referred to the on-board memory in addition to the memory used from the mainboard. Originally, the cards were planned to hit the market as &quot;GeForce 6200 w/ TurboCache supporting 128MB @ 10.8GB/s&quot; and as &quot;GeForce 6200 w/ TurboCache supporting 128MB @ 13.6GB/s&quot;.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
After concerns raised by Tom's Hardware Guide as well as &quot;other publications&quot; that the designations could be confusing or misleading, Nvidia informed us of a last minute name change: Now the cards will carry the names &quot;GeForce 6200 TurboCache 16-TC/128MB&quot; and &quot;GeForce 6200 TurboCache 32-TC/128MB&quot;, respectively. There is also a version with 64 MByte, called the &quot;GeForce 6200 TurboCache 64-TC/256MB&quot;.
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
According to Nvidia spokesman Brian Burke, it is &quot;very unlikely&quot; that stores will receive graphics cards carrying the original product naming. Suggested retail pricing for the cards starts at $80 for the 16-TC/128MB and tops out at $130 for the 64-TC/256MB.
