When we thought there was no digital device left to include in cell phones, Siemens comes with the idea of integrating a projector into the cell phone.

Still, this not a projector that allows viewing movies or images on a white background, it only projects a complete keyboard or a menu screen on a surface.

Using

a special stylus, users are able to write on a virtual keyboard, in this way easing the usage. The solution integrated by Siemens is based on the same principle as the controversial virtual keyboard that caused a lot of commotion, which made an impression only by concept, not necessarily by performance.

At first sight, the phone seems identical to classic models. On the lateral side is the projector which uses a small dimension semiconductor laser as light source. This semiconductor emits a monochrome light ray which projects the image displayed. The image can be projected on a wall or on any surface close to the phone.

The signals between the stylus and the phone are transmitted via Bluetooth and a motion sensor detects the position of the input accessory; it is located in the vicinity of the ear and it automatically reduces the volume intensity.

In order for the user to make use of the virtual keyboard, he has to “type” with the stylus the virtual buttons displayed by the projector, and a sophisticated sensor system will recognize its position in real time. For determining the exact position, Siemens specialists have devised an ultrasound and infrared system.

O demonstration of this phone’s possibilities took place during CeBit, but back then a completely functional model was not available. Siemens hasn’t decided yet if a model incorporating such a technology will be released in the future.
