Danas ove reči poprimaju neugodno aktuelan prizvuk. Moreli je najpoznatiji po svom metodu atribucije umetničkih dela, njegova je zasluga to što mnoge slike pored svog naziva imaju ime svog pravog autora. Sistematičnim i municioznim proučavanjem sitnih, jednostavnih a osobenih detalja slika velikih majstora, sredinom 19. veka ustanovio je veoma popularan metod atribucije slika. Njegovo istančano oko i veliko iskustvo bili su jedinstveni, i glavna mana njegovog metoda je ta da je zahtevala novog Morelija kako bi bila uspešno primenjena. Naučnici sa američkog Dartmut koledža predstavili su sistem "raštrkanog kodiranja", poslednji u nizu projekata matematičke analize dela, koji bi mogao da pomogne istoričarima umetnosi u procesu atribucije slika, ako ne i da ih konačno istisne, kao nepotrebne elemente jednačine.
