Ova izuzetna engleska narodna pesma (a još više melodija) budi najnežnija osećanja. Svojevremeno se čak mislilo da ju je komponovao jedan kralj za svoju voljenu, koja je u početku odbijala njegove pokušaje da je zavede, a što se odrazilo u pesmi ("neučtivo odbijanje"). Kasnije je "begunica" ipak postala njegova supruga/kraljica). No, dokazano je da ova priča nema činjeničnu podlogu. Balada pod ovim imenom prvi put je zapisana u XVI veku.
Bilo je raznih tumačenja šta označava naziv pesme, a jedno je išlo toliko daleko, da je inspiraciju za pesmu nalazilo u mladoj ženi sklonoj prostituisanju.
Melodiju ove pesme koristili su mnogi poznati izvođači iz sveta muzike: Od Elvisa, preko Koena, do grupe Džetro Tal i drugih.

Sve, ili skoro sve, upućuje na to da je Pastime with Good Company pesma iz pitanja. Ali nije! Ipak, baš si blizu odgovora, Danka!
Verovatno je zbog melodijske sličnosti sa Pastime with Good Company (The King's Ballad) pesma/melodija iz pitanja pripisivana Henriju VIII. Već sam napisao da utvrđene činjenice ne potvrđuju ovu legendu, po kojoj je Henri VIII usled odbijanja komponovao pesmu i posvetio je devojci, koja će mu kasnije postati žena (nije reč o Katarini Aragonskoj).
I još jedna koincidencija: Grupa Džetro Tal je na svoj način obradila i jednu, i drugu pesmu! Ali, na različitim albumima. Mala pomoć: Naziv albuma, na kojem se nalazi pesma/melodija iz pitanja, ima veze sa Božićem.

A što se tiče značenja reči "greensleeves" (bukvalno: zeleni rukavi), mislim da je reč o ženskom odevnom predmetu, kratkom ogrtaču sa rukavima, haljetku, pelerini, "pelengirčiću", dolamici i sl.
Da ne offtopikujem, možda je ovo tema za posebno pitanje. Kao što je greenhorn u žargonu žutokljunac, meni se čini da su greensleeves nešto što nose vrlo mlade devojke...Pogledaću tekst, mora da ima negde. Inače, očekujemo sledeće pitanje...
