SuSE Linux has been chosen by Cray Inc to play a central role in the US Department of Energy's new parallel processing supercomputer called Red Storm which is located at Sandia National Laboratories in California.
A media release from SuSE, Germany said that when completed, Red Storm would be the fastest supercomputer in the US.
Red Storm is expected to become operational in late 2004, will use AMD Opteron processors and will be used for computer simulations of the US nuclear stockpile and other applications.
The operating system for the supercomputer is likely to be SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 which will be based on the 2.6 version of the Linux kerner.
SuSE's agreement with Cray will also include developer support.
