Plural Nouns
(Mnozina Imenica)
Usage[Koriscenje] :
When you refer to more than one noun, you use the plural form of that noun.
RULE 1[Pravilo 1] :
* The plural of a noun is usually formed by adding an "S" at the end of the word.
Example [Primer] :
- The plural of cat = cats;
- The plural of flower = flowers,
- The plural of computer = computers.
RULE 2 [Pravilo 2] :
* If the word ends in S, X, Z, CH, or SH, the plural is usually formed by adding "ES".
This is because when you add an "S" to the end of these words, you have to add an extra syllable to the the word in order to prounounce it.
Example[Primer] :
The plural of boss is bosses;
The plural of box is boxes;
The plural of buzz is buzzes;
The plural of lunch is lunches;
The plural of brush is brushes;
NOTE:
Not all plurals end in "S" or "ES".
Irregular nouns are those that do not use the regular plural ending.
The following are some irregular plurals:
* If the word end in "CH" "SH" "SS" or "X" add "ES"...
If not, then just add "S".

You already know how to make most nouns into plurals just by adding an "S" at the end of the word. There are plenty of words that do not follow the rule, however.
Here is an easy case to remember:
If a word ended in -S, -Z, -X, -SH, or -CH, add -ES to the end.
Examples [Primeri] :
Dress - Dresses;
Fizz - Fizzes;
Fox - Foxes;
Wish - Wishes;
Watch - Watches.
RULE 3 [ Pravilo 3] :
* When a noun ends in -O, you also have to add -ES.
Examples[Primeri] :
Hero - Heroes;
Tomato - Tomatoes;
* Exceptions to the rule:
Studio, Piano, Kangaroo, Zoo, Buffalo, Cargo, Motto...
Just add -S to these words.
RULE 4 [Pravilo 4] :
* If a noun ends in a consonant plus the letter "Y", change the "Y" to "I" and add -ES.
Examples [Primeri] :
City - Cities;
Country - Countries
RULE 5 [Pravilo 5] :
* When a noun ends in -F or -FE, you change the "F" to "V" and add -ES.
Examples [Primeri] :
Knife - Knives;
Half - Halves;
Scarf - Scarves.
RULE 6 [Pravilo 6] :
* Here is one that always gave me trouble. Tricky one. I hope this makes it easier for you!
[Ovo zadaje muke samo tako  ]
* Sometimes a singular noun ends in -UM or -ON.
To make it a plural, change the -UM to -A.
Examples [Primeri] :
Curriculum - Curricula;
Phenomenon - Phenomena.
RULE 7 [Pravilo 7] :
* How about nouns that end in -EX or -IX?
To make them plural, change that ending to -ICES.
Examples [Primeri] :
Vertex - Vertices;
Index - Indices.
RULE 8 [Pravilo 8] :
* Nouns that end in -US become plurals by changing the ending to -I.
Example [Primeri] :
Stimulus - Stimuli
NOTE:
* Some nouns are always plural, but do not end in "S".
Examples [Primeri] :
Cattle
Police
People etc.

Nisam sigurna, proveri u rečniku, ali mislim da reč index može da ima množinu indexes.
Reči koje su latinskog ili grčkog porekla mogu da grade množinu po pravilima koja važe u jeziku odakle potiču i po pravilima engleskog jezika. Ko nije imao latinski to može da bude problem.
Na primer: datum, data.
-um je nastavak za nominativ jednine srednjeg roda, a -a je nastavak za nominativ množine srednjeg roda i otuda to data.

Plus, imenica people može da ima množinu ali ako je drugog značenja.
a people je narod, peoples narodi.

Ono sto me ovde interesuje jesu te reci latinskog porekla.
Citao sam na forumima da mnogi kazu Virus a mnozina Virii... Onda sam nasao neki link na wikipediji gde kaze da se pravilno kaze Viruses. I navodno da je latinska deklinacija nepravilna...
Sta kazu knjige?

Moj Collins Cobuild rečnik kaže da je množina od virus viruses. Oxfordov mi je kod kuće. A kod kuće imam i latinsko-srpski rečnik pa ću proveriti da li je ima.

Zaboravih da kažem da je u latinskom prisutno 5 deklinacija. I svaka se razlikuje po nastavcima. Na primer: imenice četvrte deklinacije su imenice muškog, ženskog i srednjeg roda. Imenice muškog i ženskog imaju nastavak -us, a srednjeg na -u (govorim o jednini). To je sad malo nezgodno.
